Merry Christmas!

Xmas 2005

Our family has quite a few traditions when it comes to the holidays. One of them is that we put all of the presents under the tree at midnight on Christmas eve. One by one, we get up and head down to see the tree surrounded by all of the presents. This year, I am the first one up. Its absolutely silent right now, quite a contrast to the mood that will be set once everybody else has joined me. But for now, its peacefully quiet. A good time to post and wish you all the happiest of holidays, and a Merry Christmas! Sometimes the greatest gift is just to have everybody together once again and enjoy their company!

Celebrate!

Wedding Party

Not only was yesterday Emily and Dan’s wedding, it was Katty and my three year anniversary – so there was a lot to celebrate! We had an absolute blast all day long and the wedding and reception were icing on the cake (and what a delicious cake it was!). We danced and drank lots! (BJ & JK – we did our best to drink your share, especially Keri) We then took the party back to the hotel bar and continued the revelry there! MANY of us are paying for it today – but it was an incredible time!

Feel free to check out the album that I put up in the gallery (click on the link or the picture above to get to the album). I encourage all of you to rate the pictures and leave comments!

Holiday parties

Poinsettia

I had both my office holiday party on Friday night as well as a party thrown by some close friends. There was marked contrast between the two. Not only because of the time they were thrown, or the people who were there, but more so how I enjoyed them. The office party consisted of sitting by the server and getting a few free beers and filling up with the finger food that they were serving. The party was in the afternoon (a 3-5pm affair) which didn’t make for many entertaining stories. One of the managers came up to us and told us that we were allowed to “mingle” with the rest of the crowd and that us co-workers didn’t have to stick together all the time. I didn’t really feel in the mood to mingle – in addition to the fact that my time working there is limited (I finish in March) so I guess I felt that it wasn’t worth the effort – or at least that was the excuse I was using.

The second party was quite different. Katty and I suffered through the bitter cold to arrive a bit late – but there was plenty of warmth (and booze) inside! After getting the full tour (as well as trying to wrap our heads around how much food they had!) we ended up in the kitchen. I immediately felt a bit of discomfort as it seemed that one of the women in the kitchen was staring at me! I tried to ignore it, but it was tugging at the back of my mind for quite some time… until she came up and said “Pablo?”. I felt a twinge of recognition – did I know this girl? Then she said the magic word which immediately transported me to over 18 years ago, opening the floodgates to memories that had been stowed away deep in the recesses of my mind. “Did you go to grade school at Marie Murphy!?” I had, in fact, gone to Marie Murphy for grade school, but only for 5th grade – just one year. It is the school that TK and I would refer to as Asrock 2000, the school where we would lead people to Markfest 4 with chalk outlines of naked party goers, a school where I held the long jump record at 13’7″ and the school where I learned to play Brandenburg’s concerto number 3. I couldn’t believe that she recognized me after 18 years! After catching up to what we had both been up to lately, we delved into the lives of classmates of mine from ages past. My best friend at the time, Josh is now a chef at a vegetarian restaurant, others are married, others have lost weight – I couldn’t believe the things that I was remembering, it all came back so effortlessly! So much happened in that one year… makes me look back at other years of my life and wonder if they were as eventful… but I digress. The rest of the night was a blast as well, spending time with those that I don’t get to see very often, meeting new people, and having more than a few drinks! I think we ended up getting back at around 4am. Unfortunately my pictures were unusually scarce – although Dave took it upon himself to take a photo-journal of the entire night with Amy’s camera – including a fantastic shot of him looking down at the toilet! I would love to get my hands on those pictures! (Amy, just say the word!)

More miles for on-line purchases!

Miles

As some of you may know, I’m a glutton for good deals on-line! I peruse Tech Bargains, FatWallet, and Slickdeals on a regular basis looking for great deals on technology products or basically anything else out there. I am a firm believer in maximizing any deal I can get on a purchase. All of my credit cards are airline miles cards and I use them exclusively for all purchases! What I didn’t realize until recently is that most of the airlines have on-line shopping malls that you can maximize your miles earned per dollar spent. Of course, each miles program has different offers. So in order to maximize the mileage I put together a chart that lists the miles program’s participating retailers that give additional miles – as well as the number of miles per dollar spent.

A few things to keep in mind. You must read and follow the instructions explicitly on the miles program’s web-page. What I do is find the item I want from the retailers web-site and then go back through the apropriate miles program web-page to purchase it. That way I don’t get in trouble if I end up opening another browser window and forget if it is the one that I clicked through etc… The most reliable way to get your extra miles is to click-through the miles program website and go straight to the item that you want to purchase.

Another tip is that some of the retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City etc…) have an option to pick up at the store. That way you save on shipping and you can get the item right away without having to find it in the store or wait in line to check out.

Lastly, if you can not find the retailer that you want, or if it only gives you 1 mile per dollar spent, you can always purchase a gift certificate from GiftCertificates.com (2 miles per dollar spent) for yourself and then use it at any of the hundreds of participating retailers. (edit) I just read the fine print and you do not get miles for Supercertificates. Of course, using your miles card gives you an additional mile per dollar spent! (but you don’t even need a miles card to get in on this deal!)

Small purchases won’t rack up the miles quickly, but any bit counts – right? If you were going to make the purchase anyway, why not get some extra miles out of the deal? Wish I had this prepared prior to everybody doing their holiday shopping! But for those last minute shoppers out there – it could help!

I want to stress again, that you must follow the procedure outlined at each of the mile program’s web pages. As well as any of the stipulations of the retailers.

The miles program’s web pages are linked at the Miles while you shop chart!

As always – tips, comments and suggestions are welcome!

RSS, SMS and other Blogging tools

Yahoo Alerts!
Bloglines

I have finally discovered a way to SMS my phone the comments that are placed on my blog! Thanks Russell! As it turns out Yahoo Alerts allows you to set up RSS feeds and then alert you on your cell phone! That means that you can have Yahoo Alerts let you know when your favorite bloggers have posted, when you have received comments, or any other alert via RSS. Its pretty slick! It is also usefull to send you all kinds of other information to your phone, sports scores, stocks, news, weather, horoscopes – you name it! You should make sure that you won’t get charged up the wazoo for all the SMS messages before you set it up!

I then happened upon Bloglines (notice the link on the right!). Bloglines gives you a central place to manage all your blogs. See who has updated, see what they said etc… without having to go to each individual web-page. This is especially cool because they have a mobile version to use with your cell-phone or PDA! (The only REAL reason I’d use it outside of a normal RSS agregator) Much easier to check updates that way!

(yes, that’s two posts in one day – gasp)

Winter has arrived

bushes.jpg

I wanted to post these pictures last Friday as that is when I took these pictures. Chicago received between 6-10 inches of snow on Thursday last week, it was quite the event! I absolutely loved it! I could not wait to get out into the snow and tackle the roads! Of course, my commute is only 10 minutes on a normal day, so I wasn’t going to have to suffer like some people did!. (Some much more than others) We ended up heading to the Brew & View anyway and had a blast! The snow didn’t seem to deter many Brew & Viewers either as the Vic was packed!

Taking the train home was a welcome break from having to deal with the snow..
Even if I did make Katty run up to the platform to JUST catch what I thought was the Red Line but was really the Brown. She wasn’t very happy that we had to wait at Southport and then again at Belmont for the next Red! D’OH!

Waking up the next morning and having to dig out the car with only my ice-scraper was quite a chore. I thought for sure I was going to get stuck and either need to borrow a shovel or get some help pushing! As luck would have it, I was able to get the car out on my own! Credit goes to the new tires that I put on just over a month ago – because we all know that my driving “skill” has nothing to do with it! After a few snow drifting maneuvers that put my car a bit closer to the curb that I would like – I finally calmed down and just enjoyed the drive.

New image gallery!

Coppermine

Above you can see my first attempt at a web gallery with Coppermine software. Just click on the picture to get to it. I like it because its searchable, people can vote on each picture and even leave comments! So have at it, and let me know if you have any suggestions on how it is set up. I know its not much with only one album and a handfull of pictures – This is definitely the testing phase! I hope to be able to edit the theme a bit so that it resembles my blog – but we shall see!
